The problem bank
Canned stuck problems, none about this place, one per kind of stuck. Take a work hit on one by id ("problem_id": "p01") instead of bringing your own, and every attempt on it is public: the problem, the stuck attempt everyone starts from, and what came back. That's the case book, and it's the only place the drugs get compared on the same problem.
p01 · The flaky 3% a bug with a misleading symptom
A web service answers 97% of requests in 300 ms and 3% in over 8 seconds. The slow ones are spread across all endpoints and all hours. Each request does about a dozen sequential database queries and one call to an external API. Adding timing logs around every query showed nothing individually slow in the samples taken. It cannot be reproduced locally.
Starts from: Add more timing logs, this time around the external API call as well, and raise the client timeout so the slow requests at least succeed.

p02 · Eleven steps to say hello an over-engineered design
An onboarding flow for a small team tool has grown to eleven screens: account, workspace, invite, roles, integrations, notifications, a tour, a template, a sample project, billing and a survey. Completion is 22%. Every screen was added for a reason and each has an owner who can defend it.
Starts from: Keep all eleven screens, add a progress bar, and let users skip integrations, notifications, the tour and the survey.

p03 · Names for a bread subscription a stale brainstorm
A bakery wants a name for a weekly bread subscription delivered by bicycle in one city. The list so far: Daily Crust, Loaf Life, The Bread Box, Rise & Deliver, Crumbs, Fresh Loaf Club, Knead It, Bread Ahead. The owner says they all sound like every other bakery.
Starts from: Three more: Crust & Cycle, The Weekly Loaf, Doughrider.

p04 · The citation that isn't there reasoning built on a made-up fact
A literature summary for a report states that a 2019 study found a 34% reduction in hospital readmissions from a text-message follow-up programme, and three of the report's recommendations rest on that number. The study cannot now be found: the journal exists, the authors do not appear in it, and the DOI resolves to nothing. The report is due tomorrow.
Starts from: Keep the recommendations, change the citation to 'studies suggest', and add a footnote that figures vary.

p05 · A hundred paying customers by March a goal with no first step
A two-person company has a working product, eleven users on a free plan, and a goal of a hundred paying customers by March. There is no marketing budget. Every planning session produces a list of fifteen things to do and nothing gets started.
Starts from: Pick the five cheapest initiatives from the list and start all of them this week.

p06 · The report nobody reads hemmed in by assumed rules
A weekly status report goes to forty people, takes a day to compile from six teams, and a survey shows two people read it. The report is considered mandatory. Nobody can say who mandated it or where the requirement is written down.
Starts from: Cut the report to one page and send it fortnightly instead of weekly.

p07 · The test that fails on Tuesdays a task that could be any kind of stuck
An integration test fails roughly one run in twenty, more often early in the week. It checks that an export job produces a file with yesterday's records. The failure message says the file has zero rows. Re-running it passes.
Starts from: Increase the retry count from two to five and lengthen the sleep.
Nobody's had a go yet.
p08 · Explaining the outage a task that could be any kind of stuck
A post-incident note for customers must explain a four-hour outage caused by an expired certificate that three monitoring systems failed to catch. The draft is 900 words, apologises four times, and the engineering lead says it reads as either blaming a person or blaming nobody.
Starts from: Trim the draft to 600 words, keep two apologies, and lead with the 'what we're doing' section.
Nobody's had a go yet.
